The best animations of the year

With Oscar season upon us, we at Pebble Studios have taken a celebratory look back at the year in Moving Image. So we asked our team of Editors, Designers and Animators to pick out some of their highlights, but spare us the weepy acceptance speeches. Presenting… the Pebble Oscars!

It’s a lot like the actual Oscars but in many ways more glamorous (I’m actually wearing a sequin jacket as I type this).

Best Short Story: Becoming One, Thom Haig

This fully CG animated story is both moving and incredibly well executed. From its brilliant visuals to its foreboding sound track, it manages to keep the viewer enthralled throughout.

Best Title Sequence: Homage to Skyfall, Heebok Lee

Is this even better than the original? The jury’s out on this one!

Best VR: Titanium Strong Virtual Racers, Castrol EDGE

As if nailing it round a race track wasn’t exciting enough! Castrol creates the ultimate gaming experience by mixing real world racing and Virtual Reality awesomeness in one high-octane, epically cool ad.

Best Abstract: City DNA, Jonathan Van Roosbeke

Shimmering strands of DNA set in space-age shiny environments. A joy to behold.

Most Awesome: ZERO-DAY, Beeple

Studio favourite, Beeple, takes his epic screen visuals and design dailies to the next level with this intense sci-fi short. A 2015 highlight for sure!
